New Delhi: India’s dairy sector has yet to see a decline in milk production, despite the country’s severe drought, according to a government report.
The dairy sector is in a “very challenging” situation, the Agriculture Ministry said in its annual report, which said farmers and herders in the country produce a record 11.8 million tonnes of milk per year.
But the report said the country is still recovering from the recent Drought of 2016, which caused an unprecedented decline in the volume of milk produced by the dairy sector.
“The dairy industry is in very challenging situation,” the report stated.
“Due to a significant decline in production, it is not yet clear how much milk production can be expected in the near future.
It is also not clear how many farmers will be able to produce their quota of milk.”
Even in the worst case scenario, the industry will likely have to continue to produce milk at current rates for another decade or two, and it is difficult to foresee any significant decline,” the ministry said in the report.
